The 179th Airlift Wing Headquarters and subordinate units are located at the Mansfield Lahm Airport, Mansfield, Ohio. The base is named after Brigadier General Frank Purdy Lahm (1877-1963), a native of Mansfield. General Lahm commanded the first Air Corps Training Center at what is now Randolph AFB, Texas. The unit was organized in Mansfield on 20 June 1948, as the 164th Fighter Squadron, which they received F-51D Mustang fighters
