The MAFFS program is a joint effort between the Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) designed to provide additional aerial firefighting resources when commercial and private air tankers are no longer able to meet the needs of the Forest Service. MAFFS 7, a Charlotte-based C-130H3 Hercules, encountered a severe microburst during a retardant pass and crashed near Edgemont, South Dakota with a crew of six on board.
