For the first time since 1941, the 8th Fighter Squadron deactivated with the retirement of the F-117 on 16 May 2008. A short year and a half later the 8th reactivated on 25 Sep 2009 with the arrival of the newly minted F-22 Raptor. Less than two years later the squadron once again deactivated on 15 July 2011. The Black Sheep reopened their doors on 8 Aug, 2018 as the 3rd and only F-16 Squadron training in the combat capable Block 40 F-16C/D at Holloman, making Holloman AFB the new hub for USAF F-16 training.
