The 197th Fighter Squadron, the “Copperheads,” was assigned to the Arizona Air National Guard on 24 May 1946, organized at Luke Field, Prior it had been the 412th Fighter Squadron where it earned extensive honors in Europe flying fighter sweeps over Normandy during the 6 June 1944 assault, escorting 8-26 Marauders over Occupied France, destroying bridges and marshaling yards during the Battle of the Bulge, and flying reconnaissance missions in the Rhine Valley.
